Wool Appliqué with iron on transfer backgrounds Below is a set of 5" squares appliquéd in Blanket stitch , Seeding and Detached Buttonhole, French Knots , Lazy Daisy. Hand dyed "Woolrich" Wool being used for the appliqué-six colours of the wool have been used. Method: The background is first transferred onto the ground fabric using the iron on transfer. The appliqué pieces are cut as needed from a paper pattern supplied in the pack and the cut pieces of wool appliquéd using Needle Necessities variegated stranded cotton and D.M.C cotton The background or "ground fabric" cloth in the examples shown is Moda 'Prairie" cloth but any firm cloth "Osnaberg" "Sandcastle" or similar would be suitable. The pattern can be used as one large transfer with all 5 squares for a large cushion , quilt centre, rug or wall hanging or the five squares can be cut apart and used separately as pincushions, small decorative centres for a sturdy cushion or quilt centres, table runners etc. The completed designs are shown below with one pattern showing just how the iron on transfer pattern appears. The beauty of this method is that the ground fabric is marked easily with the appliqué pattern using the iron on transfer .and a paper pattern is supplied for the appliqué pieces. NB. (Very dark background fabrics are not suitable i.e. black , dark green etc..some fairly dark fabrics are OK but on very dark fabrics the appliqué design will not be visible ) Needle- turn enthusiasts...!!! what can I say!..you can also use the pattern for finer fabrics by adding a turn over allowance. I have available a pack containing one 5" square of each of the 6 hand dyed "Woolrich" fabrics used in these examples and a skein of the Needle Necessities colour I used.. |
